Today (Jun 2, 2014) I was studying in iLearning 3 - the silent zone - with 20 other students when we were asked to leave as a result of an inservice - "Exploring assumptions about first year at university and how it can differ from reality by Anne Luzeckyi". While I understand the need for staff inservice, I feel that it shouldn't be at the expense of student study time during the study break/vacation. The disruption caused to study, in needing to pack up, and then find another space in which to study is considerable. Among the students who were asked to move, where 10 medical students, 2 Physiotherapy, 4 Nursing Student, 2 Biomedical, and 2 Marine sciences students. Id like to suggest the following: - that the policy for booking rooms such as iLearning be reviewed with respect to study vacation, - that each room - if they are booked - display at timetable reflecting availability, - the provision of other total silence study spaces which are sound-proofed (i.e. the top floor of the library reflects sounds, and its actually noisy)
The iLearning rooms are actually teaching spaces and are not part of ‘official’ library space. We have been fortunate enough that we have been able to utilise these spaces for student use when they are not in use for teaching. The spaces are however bookable for teaching purposes all year round.The event you mentioned in your email is part of the Universities critical ‘Learning and Teaching’ week program.
However, as you have mentioned there I one action that we can put in place to minimise any disruption for students who are utilising the iLearning room as study spaces.
The key one is to display a timetable reflecting availability especially during study week.
